Research Electronic Data Capture (REDCap) is a secure web application used to collect research data, create robust surveys/forms, and manage online databases. Make use of REDCap survey features such as automated survey invitations, branching logic, field validation, and more. Developed by Vanderbilt University, REDCap is a consortium-based application that is free to use by the UT Dallas community.
With REDCap you can:
- Create surveys, forms, and databases
- Build longitudinal projects with arms & events
- Collect UT Dallas IRB approved e-Consents
- Utilize popular features like Alerts & Notifications, Branching Logic, Calculate fields, and more.
- Export data for analysis in formats such as Excel, PDF, SPSS, SAS, Stata, and R
- And more!

Getting Started:
- Navigate to REDCap
- Log in using your UTD NetID and Password
- Use “Create Project” to start building a REDCap Project
- Utilize resources found on the Resources tab
REDCap Quick Tips:
- The “Field Label” is the displayed text label and the “Variable Name” is the raw field name. It is recommended that the Variable Name represents what is captured in the Field Label
- Tag all fields containing Personal Identifying Information (PII) as “identifier” fields. The department of labor has provided Guidance on the Protection of PII.
Data Security & Compliance
UTD supports two secure REDCap instances that comply with UT Dallas policy BP3096. If you require FDA Part 11 Compliance within your project, please reach out to redcap-help@utdallas.edu for further instructions.
Note: Storing and sharing sensitive, confidential, or other restricted data is not permitted. Additionally, although REDCap infrastructure is built to be HIPAA-compliant, at this time, our REDCap servers have not been approved to store or collect HIPAA data. Email the REDCap Team for more information.

Consultation & Training
The Office of Research at UT Dallas offers its REDCap users free consultations and technical support. In addition to training resources such as our REDCap Wiki and Office Hours, contact us to schedule a training workshop and learn how to get started with REDCap. Although users are expected to develop their own projects, our team would be happy to help develop the project collaboratively with you. Currently, there is no charge to a user or department for the development of projects by one of our REDCap experts, however, with an increase in demand, a fee structure may be implemented.
