AWS

Amazon Web Services (AWS) offers a variety of comprehensive cloud-based products including compute, storage, databases, analytics, and more. With robust offerings, AWS is a multi-capable service that can meet various researcher needs. Pay only for what you use, and scale as needed.

What

With AWS you can:

  • Compute
    • Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2): Virtual Machines
    • Elastic Beanstalk: Managed scalable web infrastructure
    • Lambda: Serverless processing
  • Store
    • Simple Storage Service (S3): Object storage
    • S3 Glacier: Archival
    • Elastic File system (EFS): Shared file system
  • Analyze
    • Athena: Interactive query service
    • EMR: Big data
    • SageMaker: Machine learning

When

AWS can be used by faculty, staff, and students (with a faculty/staff sponsor). AWS compute can be scaled as needed, when needed, to any size. AWS can be used to make projects publicly accessible such as applications or code demonstrations.

How

Email OIT or submit a request to obtain a UT Dallas AWS Organization account. OIT will configure baseline access and security for the new account. After the initial account setup, in most cases, accounts are managed and maintained by the account owner or designated delegates. Please note that UT Dallas does not support the use of personal accounts (including personal AWS accounts) for hosting UT Dallas data. Costs are based on usage and are billed to a university cost center.

Once setup, users will sign-in using their NetID & Password, authenticated with DUO. For more information, view OIT’s AWS page.

Data Security & Compliance

The University of Texas at Dallas has a TX DIR and BAA contract with AWS, which allows faculty, staff, and students (with a faculty/staff sponsor) to use AWS services with the assurance that AWS will swiftly notify UT Dallas in the event of a security incident. AWS services are BP3096 compliant, however, because AWS configuration is highly flexible, it is possible for a project to easily become incompliant with applicable regulations. Please reach out to Data Management for configuration assistance.
