Globus

Developed and maintained by the University of Chicago, use Globus to manage, share, and swiftly transfer large amounts of research data between UT Dallas servers or any other system. Globus provides the infrastructure to unify access to multiple storage locations; all you need is your campus log-in.

What

With Globus you can:

  • Transfer files: From kilobytes to petabytes, transfer non-sensitive data between systems such as a laptop or workstation, lab/departmental storage, HPC clusters, cloud storage, or off-campus resources.
  • Share files with others: Use Globus to manage authentication and access when sharing your data. All you need is an email address to share data with colleagues.
  • Develop applications and gateways: Globus supports REST APIs and Python SDK so that you can create integrated ecosystems of research data services, applications, and workflows.

When

If you frequently transfer large data that typically takes longer than 15 minutes to transfer, or if you’re using an unreliable connection, the use of Globus is recommended. Besides transferring data very quickly, Globus also automatically resumes data transfer in the event of temporary network disruptions. However, if you are transferring small amounts of data, scp, sftp, and ssh utilities generally work well and may be better suited.

How

Navigate to Globus and log-in using your NetID and Password.

To use Globus, it needs to be available on both source and destination “collection” endpoints.

Contact the Data Management Team for assistance.

Data Security & Compliance

Transferring data using Globus is secure and complies with UT Dallas policy BP3096. It can be used to transfer non-CUI and non-HIPAA data to a project approved storage location.
