REDCap

Research Electronic Data Capture (REDCap) is a secure web application used to collect research data, create robust surveys/forms, and manage online databases. Make use of REDCap survey features such as automated survey invitations, branching logic, field validation, and more. Developed by Vanderbilt University, REDCap is a consortium-based application that is free to use by the UT Dallas community.

What

With REDCap you can: 

  • Create surveys, forms, and databases 
  • Build longitudinal projects with arms & events 
  • Import a data dictionary, even if it’s from a different program 
  • Collect UT Dallas IRB approved e-Consents 
  • View project variables using the Codebook feature
  • Log activity for audit trails 
  • Store files in the File Repository feature 
  • Export data for analysis in formats such as Excel, PDF, SPSS, SAS, Stata, and R 
  • Limit data exports, remove identifiers, shift dates, and obfuscate record identifiers 
  • Create custom data reports 
  • Available in Spanish, Chinese, Japanese, French, German, and Portuguese 
  • Create data quality rules to identify discrepancies 
  • Collect data offline via the REDCap mobile App 
  • Connect to other systems via the built-in API 
  • Collaborate with multiple users with granular access permissions

Use survey features such as:

  • Automated Survey Invitations (ASIs) 
  • Create public or private, password protected surveys 
  • Branching/conditional/stop logic 
  • Calculated fields
  • Survey Queue

When

REDCap is the recommended research data collection platform at UT Dallas. Although REDCap is typically used for research-related activities such as clinical studies, REDCap can also be used for data collection of any purpose. With robust features, REDCap is a powerful tool to meet the needs of most research studies, including mass data collection over the span of multiple years.

How

Navigate to REDCap and sign-in using your UT Dallas NetID and Password. If signing-in for the first time, you will be prompted to complete a user profile. Note that users must first sign-in to REDCap at least once before they can be added to a project.  

Data Security & Compliance 

REDCap is secure and complies with UT Dallas policy BP3096 and it is also FDA 21 CFR 11 Compliant. However, storing and sharing sensitive, confidential, or other restricted data is not permitted. Additionally, although REDCap infrastructure is built to be HIPAA-compliant, at this time, our REDCap server has not been approved to store or collect HIPAA data. Email the REDCap Team for more information. See below for a list of permissible and non-permissible data that can be stored in REDCap.  

Our instance of REDCap can store: 

  • Personally Identifiable Information (PII) 
  • Personal Health Information (PHI) 
  • IRB Approved Human Subject Data 

Our instance of REDCap can’t store: 

  • HIPAA data 
  • Confidential data 
  • Restricted data  

Consultation & Training 

The Office of Research at UT Dallas offers its REDCap users free consultations and technical support. In addition to training resources such as our REDCap Wiki and Office Hours, contact us to schedule a training workshop and learn how to get started with REDCap. Although users are expected to develop their own projects, our team would be happy to help develop the project collaboratively with you. Currently, there is no charge to a user or department for the development of projects by one of our REDCap experts, however, with an increase in demand, a fee structure is under development.
